An intercultural work construction of preventing strategies against HIV/AIDS within the Indigenous migrant communities of the city of Rosario

M. Arrieta, J.L. Ciotta, F.A. Fernández, G. Ricordi, M.A. Stival

Issues: The city of Rosario has been receiving an increasing flow of migrant indigenous communities. There were some HIV infection cases that presented particular difficulties on their diagnosis and their adaptation to treatment. The “Anthropology and Health Team” proposes to design an HIV/AIDS prevention program for the indigenous immigrant communities. The aim is to establish a set of preventing practices related with this issue through the progressive construction and appropriation of valid culturally strategies that allow the communities to face this illness within their own cultural background.

Description: The anthropological category of “migrant” as an analytical variable was identified. The process was carried out in three stages: Definition and characterization of the population involved; the perception of health and illness, particularly HIV/AIDS; prevention plan design according to the indigenous perceptions. In order todo this we worked in three different neighbourhoods carrying out workshops on knowledge production with teenagers, young people and adults.

Lessons learned: Appropriation of the available information regarding HIV/AIDS prevention can be done in these communities. The processing and re-signification of the given information from their own cultural point of view can self-generate a variety of tools useful for the diffusion and transmission of data within their communities and places of origin.

Recommendations: We consider that it is necessary to start building intercultural health policies in order to be able to control the epidemic within these communities, to favour the HIV-test and to guarantee the treatment compliance. The need of “intercultural indigenous facilitators” at health services and HIV councils has also been highlighted, as well as their function promoting sensitivity among health teams working with intercultural approaches.
